EA Black Friday Deals - Origin.com

Just to throw out some more good deals. EA or Origin.com is having some blow out sales. For the day at least most games are 50% off, you can pick up Battlefield 3 for PC, Xbox or PS3 for $30. Need for Speed: The Run, Madden NFL 12, NCAA Football 12, FIFA Soccer 12 and NHL 12 are also $30 for consoles and PC.

If you are into Need for Speed and direct download for PC you can get an awesome deal on The Run, Shift, Shift 2 Unleashed, Hot Pursuit, Undercover, Prostreet and Burnout Paradise all for $80.

Unfortunately EA like to throw out this BS deals for direct downloads only but they still do have some good deals out on origin.com on single titles for console.

Playstation 3 Bundle for $199.99

Well if you have been looking for a deal on a PS3 here it is.

160 GB PS3, Little Big Planet 2 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One  for $199.99 if you do the super cheap shipping it stays that way all the way through check out. Don't bother trying to buy more than one though it's locked in at 1 max.

I originally went to sony.com, the deal came up at about 2:15ish am EST but there was some discrepancy at home about how many we should get and by the time we got it sorted about 15 mins later they were out of stock.
I was also waiting on Walmart.com and a few other sites since I had read a few places that their online Black Friday deals come online at 12am PST or 3am EST but it's almost 4am now EST and they still aren't up.

GameGadet - Open Source Handheld

GameGadget the next big thing in handheld gaming? While I doubt that the GameGadget 1.0 will be able to rival the 3DS, PSP and Vita, the fact that GameGadget will be open source does open up a lot of possibilities for smaller game developers.

Battlefield 3 Midnight Release, Fail

Well if you like me rushed out at midnight to get your copy of Battlefield 3 you were probably unpleasantly surprised to see "Online Pass check failed".

Alright so contrary to what I found on forums it's not that the servers are down, there isn't a pop up Online Pass screen as I thought there would be. For PS3 you have to go down to "Store", then hit Triangle to redeem your code. Unfortunately, I went to this screen a few time but the "No Content Available" screen made me exit out but sorry I lied it's up it's just not straight forward to put in your Online Pass Code.

Modern Warfare 3 Launch Trailer

I did get a little chuckle out of seeing a Battlefield trailer as the ad right before the Modern Warfare trailer.

So you think you're a gaming bad ass?

I don't consider myself a super gamer or a gaming bad ass just an average gamer but check out this video and have your skills put to shame. This guy inspired the development of  remappable PS3 controllers and in the beginning he is only playing with his face.

Playstation 3 Buttons Sticking?

I recently had a problem with my PS3 controller buttons sticking and if you google it you end up with a bunch of different remedies from take your controller apart to just go buy a new one. Now I don't recommend either of these unless you just like to take stuff apart and the joys of it always being harder to put back together or you have so much money you don't know what to do with it. So what works?

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Screenshots

Well, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii was a big deal to Nintendo at E3 so here are some screenshots I found for all those interested.

Aeria Games, Closed Browser Beta

If you are into browser RPG's or betas you might want to check this out.Aeria Games announced that Golden Age, its latest browser-based, real-time strategy title, will begin closed beta testing on October 19, 2011.

Battlefield 3 Beta Review, Operation Metro

While Operation Metro was a bit more glitchy than I expected, for it being one map I'm still pretty happy.
I really didn't think much about it as I was playing it but I like the change in environment from park area to subway to city street. The park area gives you trees, rocks and walls to hide behind, there is also a lot of concealment with all the plants and bushes but there are still some open areas for the recon guys. The subways obviously forces you into a bit more of a close combat situation but there are a few smaller open areas. The city street feels more open than the park area but there are a few places to find cover like behind cars or in buildings.

Battlefield 3 Beta Is Here

The Battlefield 3 Beta is now open to everyone. While I have read some glitch reports already from the people that had early access it only makes me slightly less excited to play. I'm not sure where it is on Xbox live but for PS3 you just have to go to the PS Store, search Battlefield 3 Beta and it will be in the top position, just click to download it (you do not need PlayStation Plus).

If you haven't already heard the Battlefield 3 Beta will be available on the PSN September 29th to October 10th. If you got the early access by buying Medal of Honor then you get a 2 day jump start which to me is a little lame but I guess 2 extra days is something.

Runescape Online RPG

Alright so about the time I started playing Torn.Com I also started playing Runescape. They are in no way related other than they can both be played for free. Runescape is a freeish game and by that I mean that you can play the game for free however you can only unlock all the skills, weapons, items, locations on the map and worlds if you are a paying member but as a free player you can still play with "members" so long as they are in a free world and the game is still fun even without all the unlocks.

Runescape is a medieval RPG that is all about completing quests and customizing your character as you see fit. From the beginning of the game you choose the way your character looks to include sex, skin tone, hair style/color, facial hair, clothing, etc. The next step in customization is to decide how you want your character to fight, you have the choice of Melee (sword, ax, mace, etc), Ranged (sling, bow, crossbow, throwing weapons) or Magic. Each of these has many different levels allowing you to upgrade weapons or spells. They also have different skills to build Attack (accuracy of melee), Strength, Defense, Ranged and Magic. There is also a ton of what I consider secondary skills like Mining, Smithing, Fishing, Crafting, Woodcutting, Fire Making and the list goes on and on.

Torn.Com - Free Online RPG - Review

Alright, so I had high hopes for Torn when I first heard about it, probably more of a sentimental thing than logical thought. To be honest I'm just not the type of gamer that stays interested in a game you only play for a few minutes a day. I hate all those Facebook games and I hate it even more when my friends send me invites over and over. If I didn't want to play that game the last 50 times you invited me I probably don't want to play it now! Anyways, I have been playing Torn for about 3 weeks now and it is definitely one of those games.

I did manage to stay interested for longer than I thought I would by joining a faction or a gang and being moderately social, at least for me. Torn has a few ways of talking with other players messaging, faction chat, global chat, beginner chat, and IRC. As far as IRC goes you have two choices you can go with the in game IRC or you can use an external program like mIRC. If you have never heard of IRC then you probably just want to stick with the in game IRC. However, if you already use IRC then you can add the Torn server (Irc.Torn.Com). One good thing about IRC in Torn other than just chatting is the freebie channels. I made $25 million in cash in about a hour or two on #freebies, so if you are a new player and you want to raise some cash quick that is the first place to go.

But back to Factions the down side to factions is also the upside if you like slow playing games and that is respect. Respect for your Faction can be gained in 1 of 2 ways 1) attacking enemy Factions and winning or 2) completing organized crimes successfully. Well both can end you up in the hospital and if you are part of a weaker Faction and you are a lower level get ready to get put in the hospital A LOT, I mean A LOT. The Faction that I am with is at war with 9 other Factions and damn every time I log in I'm in the hospital. So I have even less play time that I would if I were just playing the game without getting attacked several times a day. The end result for me is a pretty boring game.

If you get into all those Facebook games then Torn may very well be a game for you, they actually just released a Torn Lite for Facebook. But I you desire a game that you actually play you will probably get tired of Torn in no time.

The Lord of the Rings Oniline: Rise of Isengard

While I am not a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I do have to say that the graphics seem like they are pretty well done from the screenshots. I also imagine that there is probably a pretty big following waiting to see some glimpse of the up coming Lord of the Rings game so here are some screenshots that I found. For more information about the upcoming expansion release you can visits the press release.

Blockbuster by mail for gamers?

In mid July I received an email from Netflix telling me that the price was going up again. I believe this was the third time since I had signed up with them and the second in less than a year. Like a lot of people this was cause to start looking for a replacement for Netflix, I had Blockbuster years ago before they started making lame decisions like not allowing unlimited in store exchanges and raising prices. So I went to blockbuster's site to price their service. While on the site I notice that not only were they offer a discount as a marketing ploy to pick up Netflix customers but they were offer to bundle Games and Blu-rays in at no extra charge, win win right?

So for the first month of the trial every thing went pretty good, I set up my queue so that way I could get one game and then movies until I finished the game. Then when I was finished with the game get another game sent to me. There is a several month lag between when games come out and when you can actually get them by mail but if you have priced gamefly you can appreciate Blockbuster's prices.

Well here comes the catch for gamers, for the last month I have yet to receive a single game. Despite the fact that I have had 6 games at the top of my queue I am still waiting and waiting and waiting. This is due to availability of games 1 of the 6 is "unavailable", how you can offer a game that you don't have is beyond me. 2 of the 6 are short wait, if a month is not yet a "short wait" I will probably die before the 3 that are "very long wait" are ever available.

So the point here is if your main reason for going to Blockbuster is to bundle movies and games I hope you like playing the Greatest Hits games because that is about all that is available right away. Maybe this is due to an influx of subscribers switching from Netflix but no matter what the cause is the result is very very long waits on games by mail at Blockbuster. Blockbuster by mail is still good for movies but right now completely sucks for new games.

Battlefield 3 Physical Warfare Trailer

To be honest the only thing that got me excited about this trailer was the street sweeper and realistically I don't know if it will be any better than the Saiga 12 was/is but I do like to see new toys.

Torn - Free Online RPG - Join a world of Crime

I found some screenshots of the online RPG Torn. I remember as a kid playing "Drug Wars" on my TI-85 calculator. It was a basic game all text based, things like "What do you want to do?" "Go here", "Mug old people", "Go sell drugs", "Go buy drugs", etc. While I'm not saying it was a good kids game it was entertaining, a widely circulated game at my school and most importantly it was fun. There was no way to play with other people so when I saw this game Torn it took me back to being in school pretending to do work and playing this game but this seems to pick up where "Drug Wars" left off. Now test your skills against other players.
Oh and it's free so what do you have to loose?

Replacing Netflix Update

Alright, so last time I compared a few services. I still haven't found any other new services to replace Netflix but I did have a refreshing thing happen while using my free trial with Hulu.

Deap Space 2 Review - PS3

Dead Space 2
Dead Space 2 really pulls you in making you feel like you are experiencing the horror first hand and definitely has plenty of excitement.

Dead Space 2 is one of the best horror survival games I've played in a long time. It reminds me of where the Resident Evil series started out before they started pumping out worthless games.

Supremacy MMA, New Trailer and Screenshots

 Supremacy MMA
Supremacy MMA is an upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 fight game. It seems rather obvious they are going for the gritty look here but to me it just seems that they aren't quite giving it the graphic polish it needs and leaning too hard on the gritty look to pull it through.

How do you think it looks?

Red Dead Redemption Review - PS3

Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption is a role playing shooter based in the Wild West with a little more emphasis on the RPG than the Shooter. The overall story of Red Dead Redemption seems to be, you play as John Marston, former outlaw turned bounty hunter. You are sent out to the wild west to catch or kill your old partner, Bill Williamson, in order to save your family. While playing you get to mold who John Marston is morally with the choices you make.

Street Fighter X Tekken Trailer, GamesCom

For me this trailer of Street Fighter X Tekken was disappointing but maybe the game will still do well. I don't think that the graphics are good enough for Street Fighter or Tekken alone, let alone a collaboration of the two games. The idea I like, the outcome however doesn't seem to be live up to my expectation.

But you tell me what you think.

Devil May Cry Screenshots and Trailer

Well I am a fan of the show Devil May Cry, the game seems to be a typical hack and slasher but I'm sure it will get some following from the show. Below are some screenshots then at the bottom is the GamesCom trailer.

Forza Motorsport 4 Screenshots, Hockenheim Track

While I'm not a fan of screenshots that are not of actual gameplay I am a fan of the Forza series. So here of some of the screenshots I have found for the Hockenheim track in Forza Motorsport 4.

Replacing Netflix's Streaming Media

Due to Netflix price increases, two in less than a year, there has been quite a bit of talk about tens of thousands of Netflix subscribers leaving but the real question is where will they/you go? There are a few options but which if any are best for you?

I have had Netflix for years and have been streaming to my PS3 for quite a while but I have to admit my loyalty to Netflix was gone after the second price increase. My first reaction was to cancel all together, with the first price increase I lowered the number of DVDs I received at a time, now with the second price increase I have already dropped all DVDs and moved that over to Blockbuster.

To the real point of this, Streaming media providers.

Driver San Franciso Demo

Right so I just got done playing Driver: San Francisco, well the demo on PS3. I figured I wouldn't be all that into it. I had already seen the preview at E3 and sure the shifting vehicles is new but is it really new and different enough to create a totally new feeling in a driving game? Well I think so, the actual drive of the vehicles felt a little heavy to me kind of like everything above 50 to 60 mph was under steering but the shifting vehicle plus the missions or at least the 3 you can play with the demo are a lot of fun.
  • Prove It - Prove your gift to your partner, jump a car carrier, smash into the cops then run and catch a tow.
  • Team Colours - Shift between the two cars on your team plus all the other cars on the street to win 1st and 2nd places in the race
  • Escapist - Escape the police a few times with your passenger

This game is on my list of upcoming games to get, to see more about the game you can visit the driver page.

Zombies Ruined My Day on Xbox Live

The indie game "Zombies Ruined My Day" has just released on Xbox Live and while it is a simple arcade style shooter, for 80 Microsoft points or just $1 many should find it worth a play.

Dead Island - All fight together trailer

If you haven't heard of Dead Island or seen the "All Fight Together" trailer you should watch this video. While zombie games are constantly coming out, I have to say the pure blood, guts and violence of this game have me interested. While the game also seems to have great graphics going for it, I think the only real question will be the gameplay. Can it keep your attention while you are not fighting zombies?

The game takes place on the Island of Banoi, the basic story line seems to be that you are a guest on holiday at the resort when out of no where zombies are everywhere and you have to work with 3 other people to get off the island alive. The game features 4 player co-op, weapon customization, open world play, RPG side of the game to develop your character. Dead Island will be available on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC early September 2011.

Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge, New Gameplay Trailer

Here is another trailer since quite a few people have been viewing my first post about the Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge game.

Well I have seen the video and I'm pretty impressed, the graphics and gameplay seem solid but you can see for yourself below. Admittedly I don't religiously follow the game or know all the rules but I do find the game interesting. So you tell me what you think about the new trailer.

Homefront Review - PS3

Homefront
Story:
The overall story in Homefront is the US have been invaded by Korea and you are the resistance fighting back against the occupation and holocaust of the entire nation. The story is fairly refreshing in the scene that it's not just another war game with all out combat everywhere. Not to say that it's not action packed but it's not your typical urban or desert warfare game. You move threw the city and outlying areas acting with reason(most of the time) and not just gunning everything down that you see.
There are four members of your main group counting you. You were chosen for your piloting ability although there is not that much flying in the game, it's mostly about gorilla warfare. Although they have names they really weren't defined as characters with a lot of personality, so I won't go through a break down of who they are.

Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge Trailer

Well it seems that I missed it but yesterday this video was released to show off another Rugby contender to release this year, Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge. The game is said to have 93 teams and 31 Stadium locations. Rugby Challenge also offers Single Match Mode, Competition Mode, a multi year Career Mode and Tutorial Mode. Keeping the online gamer in mind you will be able to play in 4 on 4 matches on PSN, Xbox live or PC. The game will be released for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Sony Vita in Q3 2011. To stay up on all the news for this game you can visit the site Rugby Challenge.

Here is another gameplay trailer

Rugby World Cup 2011 Demo

For those of you anticipating the release of Rugby World Cup 2011 there is a little good news in the way of a demo. 505 Games and HB Studios announced today that the demo will be available on Xbox Live on August  2nd 2011 and PSN on August 3rd 2011. This demo will feature England and South Africa in Auckland, New Zealand. While I am personally a little disappointed they didn't offer more choices in the way of teams or locations and the demo seems a bit late with the game set to release August 26th but I will still be sure to give the demo a try.

Dead Block for Xbox live arcade and PSN

Digital Reality and Candygun Games announced their upcoming zombie game, Dead Block, which will be released on Xbox live on July 6th for 800 microsoft points and PSN on July 20th for $9.99. The game is set in the 1950's and there are 3 main charecters Mike Bacon a Boy Scout, Jack Foster a construction worker, and Foxy Jones a meter maid. From the trailer it seems to be targeted toward the older side of young kids around 12 years old or so. It is quite cartoonish but still has some gore to it. While I'm sure that some adults out there will be able to get into this game I don't think that is it's intent. For $10 it maybe worth a download but I don't know how many adults will want it or how many young kids will be allowed to get it.

Killzone 3 Review - PS3

Killzone 3

Overall Killzone 3 is one of the most visually stunning shooter to date. When I first turned it on I was blown away by the smooth realistic graphics. The games graphics unquestionably make it one of the best looking shooters I have ever played or seen. I thought that the movie scenes were well done, everything had that smooth polished look. I read a few reviews for Killzone 3 that said that the story was a little weak, maybe that is a comparison to Killzone or Killzone 2 but for a shooter the story is pretty good. Admittedly the only reason I played the campaign as long as I did was to get used to the controls but the campaign is still good. I have just grazed the online play but I was actually pleasantly surprised, I am a Battlefield addict so I tend to think “There is no way I will enjoy this as much as Bad Company 2” before I even start to play a shooter but this is a good shooter overall and now playing it I am glad I bought it.

While none of the characters actually stood out to me aside from Rico who tends to do his own thing, disobey direct orders and just generally get into trouble. I thought that the two side were divided well enough that I didn't need to have a star character. Admittedly I am an action guy so if you are really into the back stories it may not be appealing to you but it was more than enough for me.

The campaign mode is a graphic master piece and overall just fun to play. I thought that the story pulled together the action of the campaign despite what others have said. There were a few minor downsides to me but honestly they are almost not worth mentioning. The first thing was while moving from one area to another I noticed a one second hesitation while it is loading up the upcoming action but with the graphics in the game I would think it is to be expected also it is only about a second pause and with the overall look of the game well worth it. The second thing actually was fairly frustrating to me, shooting someone in the head should kill them, right? Well don't count on it, one of three things will happen you score a head shot the enemies helmet goes flying off and they are still alive like nothing happened, two they are hit and they just look around like you were throwing rocks at them or the least likely to happen they actually die from the head shot and while I realize this may seem like a pretty petty thing it is actually fairly frustrating when you are the one shooting. Overall though I did like the campaign mode, I can't say that I would go back and play it over and over again but should I ever get a 3D TV I definitely would play it again just to see what I was missing, I'm sure it would be nothing less than mind blowing.

Well, had I decided to stop playing after the first day online I wouldn't have much good to say but I'm glad I didn't. The first day I played online my first few matches went great I was on a good team and I imagine the other team was pretty bad because with no unlocks I averaged a K/D (kill to death ratio) of 2.0 which for a shooter is pretty good and great for a first day. I ending up getting off for a few hours and coming back to a team that seemed to play together a lot, everyone had mics and I thought great another winning team at least I'll rack up some wins. Well I was in for a surprise we did win but during the second match one of them started with F this F'n guy he's blowing my F'n cover and this continued for probably about 3 minutes or so. In the beginning it was kind of funny because I have been there during Bad Company 2 matches, a medic would stand next to me and not revive me and I would yell at them with my mic. However to my surprise this guy actually said my name at the end of the 3 minute rant. It was pretty shocking to me as I was running around to different parts of the street we were fighting on and not really camping in one spot like he was complaining about I did later see him were I had put a turret but I would think reason would say first come first serve. If someone sets up a turret where you would normally snipe from just find another spot. Sure if someone is following you around blasting a machine gun while you are trying to hide and snipe complain. So that team left and came back later this time on the enemy side and it just kept going. You can talk to everyone while waiting for the next match and it just became a trash talking contest between one guy on our team and a few guys on theirs. Lots of F you, F this, some talk about I bet you have a busted old PS3, which I don't even get but okay? Some Call of Duty fanboy talk, just as a side thing here, where did “fanboy” come from I think everyone sounds really stupid just saying it? It started to make me wonder if this was going to be a frequent occurrence when I hit the Killzone 3 multiplayer. I did go on to play another day and luckily for my sanity I didn't run into anything like it again. People with mics are far and few between which is usually not a good thing but if every loosing team is going to talk trash to the winning team then yeah it's a good thing.

Overall online gameplay is good there aren't near as many unlockable weapons as Bad Company 2 but Killzone 3 the level up system is a lot slower and points can be put into any class you want. So you could max all classes just playing your favorite class if you wanted and the slow points system keeps you hooked trying to get than next unlock. The maps are a lot smaller than Battlefield games but you have far less players players on the map so it works out ok. I didn't play one map with vehicles so I assume there aren't any which makes sense with smaller maps. The bots that you can build/call are pretty cool and the stealth mode for snipers is also a nice feature. Overall the multiplayer mode somewhat pushes you to camp but you can successfully run and gun if you are good at it. There is not much team work with most players unless you are camping to defend one spot. However, the multiplayer was still exciting and fun so much so that I think I will be opting to get all the added maps.

Pros:
  • Graphics are some of the best among any shooter I've played
  • Online gameplay has things you don't get in a regular shooter(bots, cloaking, etc)
  • Level up system is a spend where you want kind of system
  • Maps are all quite different from each other
  • Limited weapons somewhat make it easier for the beginner on multiplayer

Cons:
  • Controls are not that customizable
  • Maps are fairly small online
  • No vehicle that I saw online
  • Not a lot of team work from the average online player (which is the norm really)
  • Lots of camping
  • Limited weapons could be somewhat disappointing for hardcore online players

Rugby World Cup 2011

Rugby World Cup 2011

Rugby World Cup 2011 was announced back in May and will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 26th 2011. Now, I don't think that Rugby World Cup 2011 will give Madden or NCAA any competition in the US but I do personally find rugby an interesting sport. For that reason I am interested to see what publisher 505 Games and developer HB studios can put together.

There have been press releases this week announcing an official partnership with the Rugby Football Union and the French Rugby Federation. This means that they will be able to use actual players from England and France's rugby unions.

This game will allow players to pick from 20 Rugby World Cup 2011 participating countries, and attempt to lead their team to the Webb Ellis Cup. There haven't been a lot of game details or screen shots released and none of actual game play. There has also been mention of players competing against each other in online game play but no real details on that either. But the GM at HB studios has said that there is a great attention to detail in the visual quality of the game. While I am not personally impressed by the latest screen shots of the game to be honest I never really get to excited about screen shots. I always feel like they are either the best shot of a movie part of the game or just random shots from development that would be better off not shown.
